BILLS: Everything you need to know about training camp

By Jay Skurski

5 things to know about camp

1. If it rains, the Bills will move indoors, and those practices are closed to the public. The interactive areas will also close. The best way to make sure camp is going on as scheduled is to call the hotline at 800-441-5942 or visit the team’s Web site at www.buffalobills.com.

2. Alcohol is prohibited. Fans can bring in their own food, beverages, small coolers, thermoses and cameras.

3. Training camp is free, while food and beverages will be sold. Merchandise and ticket vendors will accept credit cards.

4. Public restrooms will be located throughout the fan areas.

5. There will be an information booth within the vendor area and a first aid tent will be available.

Public parking/shuttle information

• There is no public parking on the St. John Fisher College campus. Fans can use public parking lots at either East Rochester High School or Nazareth College. The lot at East Rochester High School will be closed Friday and Saturday.

A $1 (for fans between the ages of 12 and 62) shuttle service will get fans to St. John Fisher College. All services are handicap accessible.

Directions

• Take Route 90 (NYS Thruway) to exit 46. Then take Interstate 390 North to Interstate 590 North. Exit at Monroe Avenue. Take a right on Monroe Avenue and green and white road signs will direct fans to any of the shuttle lots.

Key training camp dates

• July 28: First day of practice from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and 2:15-4:15 p.m.

• July 29: Buffalo Bills pep rally on Main Street in Pittsford at 12:30 p.m.

• Aug. 3: First public night practice, from 7-9:15 p.m.

• Aug. 12: First preseason game, 7:30 p.m. at Carolina

• Aug. 18: First home preseason game, 7 p.m. vs. Cincinatti

• Aug. 24: Last training camp practice, from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Camp hotline

• The Bills have established a training camp hotline for fans. The number is 800-441-5942. Fans are encouraged to call that number or visit www.buffalobills.com for the most accurate information, since practice times and schedules are subject to change.

Interactive area

Open whenever the Bills practice, the interactive area is adjacent to the practice fields. It includes the Buffalo Bills experience, which is a series of activites that includes:

• Quarterback challenge

• Fourth-and-goal bungee run

• Football toss

• Obstacle challenge

• Run the gauntlet

• Touchdown run

• Obstacle course

• Basketball free throw

Kids’ autograph zone

• Children under the age of 14 will have a chance to get autographs following each practice. Three players per session will be at the autograph tent for 15 minutes and each child can get one item signed. Because of high demand, the lines will be limited to the number of children that can be accomdated that day.

Fans can also get autographs along the fence of the field as the players exit practice after each session. A complete schedule of players and the days that they are signing autographs will be posted on buffalobills.com.

TRAINING CAMP BATTLES

Starting quarterback

- THE CANDIDATES: J.P. Losman, Kelly Holcomb and Craig Nall

- OUR PICK: Losman — The young homeowner has the most physical talent and chemistry with No. 1 receiver Lee Evans.

No. 2 receiver

- THE CANDIDATES: Peerless Price, Josh Reed, Roscoe Parrish, Andre’ Davis, Sam Aiken

- OUR TAKE: Price — He’s eager to prove that his failures in Atlanta — not his success in Buffalo — was a fluke.

Starting left guard

- THE CANDIDATES: Tutan Reyes, Duke Preston

- OUR PICK: Reyes — He’s more experienced and got most of the reps in minicamp while Preston filled in on the right side for the absent Chris Villarrial.

Starting strong safety

- THE CANDIDATES: Donte Whitner, Coy Wire, Matt Bowen

- OUR PICK: Whitner — His skills are tailor-made for the Tampa 2 defense, which is why the Bills drafted him so high.

Strong-side linebacker

- THE CANDIDATES: Jeff Posey, Angelo Crowell

- OUR PICK: Crowell — Posey’s been quiet in his three seasons with the Bills, while Crowell finished with 125 tackles during a breakout 2005.

Nickel cornerback

- THE CANDIDATES: Jabari Greer, Ashton Youboty, Eric King

- OUR PICK: Greer — Youboty’s too raw and King looked out of place at times in 2005. Greer’s experience will get him the job, at least at the beginning of the season.
