Niagara Gazette — No one in the community should miss the opportunity for a Thanksgiving Day dinner, thanks to well-coordinated efforts of local agencies that constantly reach out to those in need.
Among the biggest providers for this special occasion are Community Missions of Niagara Frontier Inc., 1570 Buffalo Ave., and Heart, Love & Soul Inc., 939 Ontario Ave.
As in the past, the Hard Rock Cafe, Prospect Street, will be serving some 240 persons today shuttled from the missions starting at 11:15 a.m. In addition, the meals will be provided to 17 shut-ins unable to make it to the restaurant.
“Earlier, we put out a ‘Call for Turkeys’ to the entire community,” said Katie Trombley, public relations and development manager for the Community Missions. She said a number of people simply drop off a turkey at the main office on Buffalo Avenue that they wish to donate for the Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners. Trombley said that the agency has experienced an increase in the number of requests for assistance, including from working families that simply can’t cope with their present earnings.
Meanwhile, the Heart & Soul staff works in conjunction with Yvonne and Matt Davis and the Word of Life Church to host the Thanksgiving dinner at the American Legion-LaSalle-Griffon Post 917, Seneca Ave., Niagara Falls. The free meals will be served from noon to 6 p.m. today, “With the donated food and turkeys, we’ve been able to provide 375 households with boxes of items people will have to prepare their meal,” said Sister Beth Brosmer, OSF, executive director of Heart & Soul.
A third source to help the needy, the Niagara Gospel Rescue Mission, a faith-based, not-for-profit organization that aids the homeless and impoverished, announced that its second annual “Feed the Falls” initiative was preparing up to 1,000 home-cooked turkey dinners for delivery to the homebound, senior citizens, families or anyone in need.
“We’re teaming up with local churches to make sure no one goes hungry this Thanksgiving,” said Shaun Smith, executive director of the Rescue Mission, 1023 Ferry Ave.
