The 24th annual Great Lakes Beach Sweep will be held from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday. The Aquarium of Niagara is coordinating the Niagara County portion of this massive environmental cleanup. The Niagara County cleanup will focus on Fort Niagara State Park and the Four Mile Creek area in Youngstown.
The beach cleanup is a global effort. People all over the world are cleaning the trash on their shorelines this month.
This project is the world’s largest volunteer data gathering effort on behalf of the environment. It has helped educate people all over the world about the importance of protecting our environment for the future. Worldwide, over 500,000 people annually conduct cleanup activities around every major body of water.
By documenting the trash, pollution trends are determined. Cataloging the type, amount, weight and location of debris found during the cleanup provides information vital to identifying sources of trash. This is the priority of ICC (International Coastal Cleanup) and it’s what makes it different form other cleanups. The data is used to create long-term solutions.
