Niagara Gazette — YOUNGSTOWN — Visitors to Old Fort Niagara this weekend will be afforded a unique chance to view the historic site in a different light — at night.
Fort officials announced the nocturnal tour will be conducted, starting at 7 p.m. today, with an interpreter focusing on the role of the fortress during the War of 1812.
Bob Emerson, executive director of Old Fort Niagara, noted that many troops fought in the Niagara Region in that era and it has been estimated that nearly 50 percent of all wartime casualties occurred along the Niagara border. Numerous battles were waged between Buffalo and Youngstown on the U.S. side and from Fort Erie, Ont., to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Amidst all that action were five major engagements between Fort Niagara and Fort George.
Emerson said the walking tour will explain in vivid detail Fort Niagara's role in the fighting from 1812 to 1815. The program will include a briefing on uniforms, gear and equipment used by the military in that conflict.
Tickets ($20 per person) are available by calling in advance (745-7611). The fort will be closed Thanksgiving Day but open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the holiday weekend.
On a related note, the not-for-profit fort association recently kicked off its 2012 Annual Fund with a goal of $55,000. A spokesman said contributions may be sent to: Old Fort Niagara, c/o Annual Fund, Post Office Box 169, Youngstown, N.Y., 14174.
