Looking back, Florence Reid never imagined reaching the day she would be celebrating her 100th birthday.
“I’m kind of surprised,” she said. “I have so many nice things to be thankful for: Good parents, good relatives, dear friends.”
The Sanborn woman turns 100 today and will celebrate with around 60 friends and family members on Saturday at Shawnee Country Club, which is ironically on the same grounds that her father purchased as farm land in 1926.
Her birthday party will be the first time in many years the entire family will be able to get together, she said. Reid’s three nieces, two nephews, 15 great nieces and nephews and 21 great-great nieces and nephews will be at the celebration.
“She treats everyone right down to the last great-great niece and nephew equally as if it were her own kid,” said Kenny May, Reid’s nephew. “She would never forget a birthday, she keeps a book with everyone’s birth dates in it.”
Reid was born in Tonawanda and moved to Sanborn in 1926 when her father purchased the family’s farm. She was married to her late husband, James Reid, for 51 years and enjoyed taking trips to Florida for many years.
Reid has been an active member at both Hope United Methodist Church in Pekin and Sanborn Methodist.
“I pray a lot and it gets me through,” she said.
Reid's main hobbies over the years have included bowling and golf. She still enjoys playing cards and bingo and enjoys doing crossword search puzzles.
