Animal sanctuary continues recovery

Niagara Gazette — The barn on Fiegle Road went up in flames on Sept. 11 and the rescue vehicle was destroyed by fire on Mile Strip Road in November, but life goes on at Lakeview Animal Sanctuary.

Construction on a new barn in Pendleton began Tuesday, a rescue truck is on loan from a friend in Medina. Meanwhile, the Girl Scouts of Sanborn held a benefit at Skateland on Saturday.

The girls, who are 10- and 11-years-old, were earning their Girl Scout Bronze Award and collecting donation items the animals are in need of. The troop heard of the adversities befalling Sandi Pfhol and the animals she has rescued so they wanted to do something to help.

“The girls thought of this. They wanted to help her out. She’s had a rough time,” Co-leader Lisa Capell said. “They worked at Lakeview for a day when they were Brownies. The girls leaned what Sandi does — which is a lot.”

The children fed the animals in the morning and cleaned out the stalls for expectant baby chicks. They brushed the horses and stayed the whole day.

Pfohl also brought Thomas Thaddeus Butterball to a Brownie meeting at the Hope United Methodist Church. “When you have a turkey walking around a Brownie meeting, you never forget it,” Capel said. “They thought it was wonderful.”

It’s not pretty on Fiegle Road, but there is progress. Sean Fitzgibbon of Cambria, Dave Hedley of Olcott and James Moore of Newfane are working on construction of the 100-by-32-foot barn for Parco Builder Systems. Paul Perna, a manager of Tops Market in Lockport, is providing some food for the animals.

Pfohl lost her appointment book and gift vouchers which were on the dashboard of the Blazer that burst into flames. The sanctuary takes part in many community activities and requested those who booked activities to give her a call.

The sanctuary participated in Light Up Lockport on Saturday and Tom Butterball was in the city to have his picture taken with children — and grownups.
