King looking for reelection to school board

Niagara Gazette — One of the longest-tenured members of the Niagara Falls City School District's board is seeking another term in office.

Don J. King, serving his 35th year on the board, said he's looking to continue serving the community, one of the main goals of any board member.

"Serving 34 years on the school board has provided me with the experience necessary to be a better advocate for all our students, our staff and the community," he said.

King said the next five years will present some dramatic challenges for public education, especially for the small city district. Those decisions, including possibly finding a new superintendent – which King said is the most important decision a board makes – could have a lasting impact on the future of the entire city.

He said the district also has its hands full facing teacher and principal evaluation changes and an evolving fiscal climate which needs to be addressed.

"During the next five years, the board will possibly select a new superintendent, will be addressing social media concerns that necessitate common sense approaches, will face new and complex teacher evaluations and must understand fiscal situations that could impact the entire city."

King said he's also excited to have discussions about longer school years, capital improvement projects, program consolidations with neighboring schools and developing ways to increase emotional intelligence among the student population.

He's previously championed developing information technology solutions in school and has been vocal about finding ways to reduce the district's truancy issues.

King and his wife, Betty King, have four daughters. They're all graduates of Niagara Falls High School.

The current board, including King, will hold its regular monthly public meeting beginning at 7 p.m. tonight in the district's meeting auditorium, 630 66th St. A discussion of school business will be held before the meeting, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
