North Tonawanda homicide suspect in court

Niagara Gazette — A North Tonawanda woman being held without bail on a homicide charge was brought into city court again on Tuesday for violating the terms of her probation on a previous DWI conviction.

Jennifer R. Marchant, 23, was arraigned for the violation a month after she was arrested for killing her boyfriend with a kitchen knife on Feb. 7 inside her Oliver Street apartment. She is being held at the Niagara County Jail on second-degree murder charges.

"You're automatically charged if your arrested while you're on probation," said Jennifer Steele, chief city court clerk.

Marchant's attorney, Kevin Mahoney of the Hogan Willig, said his law firm is working on obtaining information regarding the stabbing while maintaining that the death of her boyfriend, Ralph Stone, was the result of self-defense. He added that Tuesday's hearing was adjourned quickly with little talk of her more serious charge.

Marchant was arrested in North Tonawanda on April 14, 2012 for DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation, driving without insurance and driving the wrong way on a one-way street on Sweeney and Webster streets. She has a blood alcohol content of .13. She was also convicted of another DWI charge in the Town of Tonawanda on January 2012.

Niagara County Assistant District Attorney Lisa M. Baerhre handled the arraignment. Marchant's next court date is scheduled for April 25 in North Tonawanda City Court.
