— For the period of Oct. 8 to 14, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 111 calls. The total number of service calls for 2012 to date is 4,987.
• HAZARDOUS CONDITION: On Oct. 10, a functioning carbon monoxide detector prevented a potential tragedy at a health facility in the 2400 block of Allen Avenue. Upon receiving the call, at 10:24 a.m., Truck 1 responded and used their meter to discover that dangerous levels of CO were coming from a malfunctioning hot water tank. The building was evacuated and maintenance was called in to do the necessary repairs.
• ACCIDENT: On Oct. 11, a cab driver and his passenger were injured when the vehicle he was driving, while traveling at a high rate of speed, struck a utility pole in front of Firehouse 3 at 2:37 a.m. at the corner of 11th Street and Ontario Avenue. Both the cabbie and his passenger were ejected from the vehicle upon the collision and were treated for their injuries by a full assignment from Platoon 3. They were subsequently transported by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.
• ACCIDENT: On Oct. 12, Truck 1 was dispatched, at 1:28 p.m., to the corner of Seventh Street and Ferry Avenue for a two car accident. Two patients had facial abrasions due to the air bag deploying, and a pregnant woman was stabilized for neck and back injuries and taken to Mount St. Mary’s Hospital.
• FIRE: On Oct. 14, Platoon 1 was sent, at 10:27 a.m., to a boarding house in the 1100 block of Main Street for a fire in a bedroom. Careless disposal of smoking materials was determined to be the cause of the fire and the crews were able to keep damage to a minimum.
NOTE: This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme was “Have two ways out.” Just like a rabbit always has two ways out of its warren, residents are reminded to always be “rabbit ready” in case a fire should strike your home. If that happens, your home could be engulfed in smoke and flames in just a few minutes. It is important to have a home fire escape plan that prepares your family to think fast and get out quickly when the smoke alarm sounds. What if your first escape route is blocked by smoke or flames?
