Deputies catch up to Youngstown hit-and-run driver

A Youngstown man was charged with drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident after a traffic stop on Upper Mountain Road Saturday night.

Called to a report of a reckless driver, a deputy stopped Brian T. Braun, 45, 1575 Lake Road, about 8:45 p.m. near Shawnee Road. The deputy said he watched Braun run a stop sign before pulling him over.

The deputy said Braun appeared highly intoxicated and told him he was going to Buffalo from Youngstown, then Youngstown to Youngstown. He could not say where he was at the time he was stopped, just “somewhere near Youngstown.”

Upon investigation of the vehicle, the deputy noticed damage to the car and it matched up with a car that was involved in a hit-and-run accident in Porter earlier Saturday night. The accident was reported to have occurred near the Lake Road entrance to the Robert Moses Parkway.

When asked if he had been involved in an accident, Braun responded, “You already know I was.” When asked where the accident occurred, Braun told the deputy, “at the Robert Moses ramp, at first I thought I hit a tree.” When asked why he didn’t stop, Braun said, “I did, like 300 feet away. Did I kill anybody? I was scared.”

The deputy said Braun repeatedly asked if anyone in the other car was hurt and the deputy told him one person suffered back pain, to which Braun replied, “Oh, that sucks, but at least nobody died.”

Braun failed two out of three field sobriety tests at which point he refused to take any more, stating, “Just take me to the police station. I’m (expletive).” He did give a positive reading on an Alcosensor test. At the sheriff’s office, Braun’s blood alcohol content was measured at 0.19 percent, which resulted in an aggravated DWI charge (anything above 0.18 percent results in the charge.)

In all, Braun was charged with DWI, aggravated DWI, a traffic offense and leaving the scene of an accident.
