BUFFALO: Suspect in chase dies in his cell

Officials say 29-year-old man hanged himself at the Erie County Holding Center

Staff Reports

The man involved in a Monday night police chase through parts of Niagara County was found dead in a cell at the Erie County Holding Center on Wednesday, according to officials.

Jeremy M. Kiekbush, 29, of 1451 Campbell Blvd., Amherst, reportedly used a bed sheet to hang himself.

Reports from WIVB-TV said Kiekbush was the third inmate to commit suicide in three months at the holding center in Buffalo.

Niagara County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Steven Preisch said Kiekbush was charged with numerous traffic violations after he led Barker and Middleport police, and Niagara County sheriff’s deputies on a chase through Wilson, Barker and Somerset, until he was caught in a foot chase just east of the Orleans County line.

A police report said the Kiekbush was captured by Middleport Police Sgt. Jeffrey Waters in Orleans County, where the suspect was taken into custody by Niagara County sheriff’s deputies.
