NIAGARA FALLS — Two gang members being sought in connection with the recent rash of violence in the city were picked up Monday and Tuesday by Falls police.
The arrests were a result of an ongoing investigation involving Falls police and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents, according to Narcotics Division Capt. Morris Shamrock.
Cecil J. Mulkey, 19, of Jordan Gardens, was picked up Monday. Shamrock said ATF agents and Falls police had been looking for him in recent days.
Officer Jeff Grzeskowiak spotted Mulkey’s car Monday at Portage Road plaza. Shamrock said Grzeskowiak kept Mulkey under surveillance until additional officers were able to take him into custody in a more secure location. The Eighth Street Crew gang member is being held on weapons and drugs charges.
About 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Detectives John Faso, John Galie and Steve Reed spotted Arrmon “Murda Mook” Askew on the 1500 block of Pierce Avenue.
Shamrock said detectives waited until Askew crossed into an alley before taking him into custody, cornering him between houses.
A confirmed member of the Bloods, Mulkey, 21, of Packard Court, is being held on drug charges.
Along with Howard Welch, a member of the Eighth Street Crew who was arrested Monday, Shamrock said Mulkey and Askew are suspected to have been involved in the recent acts of violence in the Cataract City, including Saturday’s shooting on Pine Avenue and other recent incidents of gunplay over the past few weeks, at 16th and Niagara streets and in the 1300 block of Ashland Avenue. The shootings are believed to be tied to disputes between a number of different street gangs over turf.
Shamrock said more suspects are being sought and Falls police will release additional information later in the week.
