Bank robber walks away, vanishes.

Niagara Gazette — A man who displayed no weapon held up the Bank of America branch at 2700 North Main St. in Newfane about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and eluded a law enforcement dragnet. 

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a robbery at 12:36 p.m. The preliminary investigation revealed that a man entered the bank and demanded money from a teller. No weapon was displayed or threatened. 

The suspect is described as a black male of average build, approximately 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-8 and weighing between 170 to 180 pounds. He was wearing dark-colored pants, a black leather jacket, a black beanie/skull cap and black sunglasses. He also had what appeared to be white medical tape on his forehead, left cheek and nose.

He left the bank, walked northeast and vanished, Sheriff James Voutour said.

Multiple Niagara County Sheriff’s Office patrol units, a Niagara County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit and the New York State Police responded. A Border Patrol helicopter also assisted in checking the area. 

There was lockdown of Newfane schools as a precaution.
