Tonawanda man charged in fatal stabbing

Niagara Gazette — A stabbing in the Town of Tonawanda's Sheridan-Parkside housing development has left a 34-year-old woman dead, according to police.

Edmund Serwinowski, 22, was arrested early Sunday morning after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend, Jennifer Sacaridis, following a fight.

"There were a series of events that took place, with words being exchanged," Lt. Nick Bado said. "He then responded with a knife."

Police were called to 26 Blackmore Street, the victim's home, at about 4:55 a.m.

Sacaridis had suffered multiple stab wounds and was taken to Kenmore Mercy Hospital, where she died not long after.

Serwinowski attempted to leave the scene, but Patrol Officer Mark Scranton was able to arrest him.

Serwinowski was arraigned on a charge of second-degree murder and was sent to the Erie County Holding Center. He will be in town court Thursday at 4 p.m. for a felony hearing.

According to police, Serwinowski had been living just a few doors down at 16 Blackmore St., but also had a key to Sacaridis' home. Police are not sure who was living with Sacaridis, but her mother and 10-year-old son were at the home at the time of the stabbing.

Police believe Serwinowski had only been dating Sacaridis for about a month.

Authorities aren't sure how long the suspect has been living in the town and police don't have a permanent address for him, but Bado said police "are familiar" with Serwinowski.

"I don't know if he had a criminal history," Bado said. "But we have encountered him before."

Police are not releasing any information on his employment status or potential mental health history.

Bado believed an autopsy on the victim had been performed Monday morning.

"We can't release any details on that, we need to protect the integrity of the case once it goes to court," Bado said.
