Man stabbed in Pine Avenue robbery attempt

Niagara Gazette — Falls police are seeking a pair of suspects who ambushed an employee of a Pine Avenue business on Monday night.

Officers said they responded to a call of an armed robbery, around 10:30 p.m., in the 1300 block of Pine Avenue. A 46-year-old man told them he was leaving work and had walked to his car, which was in a parking lot on the west side of the business.

The man said he found a tire on his car was flat and he began to change it. As he did, two suspects, dressed in black and wearing respirator-style masks, ran from behind the rear of the store and confronted him.

One of the suspects told the victim, "Give me all the money or I'll stick you." At the same time, the other suspect tied to spray the victim in the face with a mace-like substance.

"(The suspects) may have thought he was going to make a (bank) drop at the end of his shift," Falls Police Detective Lt. Mike Trane said. "That wasn't the case."

The victim said he began to struggle with the suspects when he felt a sharp pain under his left armpit. The man said he then broke free from the suspects and ran to a nearby convenience store.

"It looks like it may have been (an ambush)," Trane said, "But we don't know for sure. (The suspects) were certainly prepared to rob somebody."

The suspects were last seen running south in the 600 block of 13th Street.

The victim was taken to the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for treatment of a non-life threatening stab wound.

Anyone who may have information about the attack or may have seen it, is asked to call the Falls Police Criminal Investigation Bureau at 286-4553.
