Staff Reports
A Border Patrol agent, from the Niagara Falls station, helped to rescue two hikers stranded in the Niagara Gorge near Whirlpool State Park on Sunday.
The agent responded to a Niagara County 911 distress call at about 5:30 p.m. indicating that the pair, both U.S. citizens, had begun a gorge hike from Devil's Hole State Park during daylight hours, but became disorientated after sunset.
The Border Patrol agent, who was on regular patrol in the area, climbed into the gorge, located the stranded hikers and guided them to safety on an alternate trail near the Whirlpool International Bridge. The hikers, a man and woman, were uninjured and were able to leave the area without assistance.
