SOMERSET —
Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Carmen Road Saturday afternoon after a horse was found laying in a ditch without any restraints or supervision.
The person that found the horse tied it up, brought it some apple carrots and water and called police. They said it appeared the animal was malnourished and emaciated.
A deputy said the horse was indeed very skinny with several bones showing in its hind area and rib area. The deputy knocked at the door of the home where the horse was believed to have come from but no one answered.
The deputy then called the SPCA of Niagara and spoke with an employee who said they’d make some calls and call the deputy back. While waiting for that call, a Middleport police sergeant arrived to assist. The sergeant said he was familiar with horses and took a look at the animal. He immediately told the deputy the horse was in bad shape and clearly malnourished.
An SPCA official soon arrived on the scene too and agreed the horse was in bad shape and could not be left alone. The Middleport sergeant offered to have his wife bring a horse trailer and take the animal to a friends stable where it could be examined by a vet.
After loading up the horse on the trailer, the SPCA official took a look around the property and found four dogs in a pen in a barn without food or water. He found a water source and food and brought it to the dogs. He also found two cows with hay but no water and three pigs with corn but no water.
Shortly after leaving the property, the deputy said a dispatcher called him to let him know the property owner had returned and was distraught over the horse being seized.
The matter is still under investigation and charges are pending against the owner of the horse.
