For the period of March 4 to 10, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 96 calls. The total number of service calls to date in 2013 is 1,132.
• On March 4, a full assignment from Platoon 1 was sent, at 1:08 p.m., to the 8500 block of Lindbergh Avenue for a report of a structure fire. Arriving crews found a fire in the wall of the living room. After extinguishing the blaze, it was determined that the fire was caused by improper wiring in an outlet box. Damage was listed at $400.
• FIRE: On March 4, Platoon 1 was dispatched, at 3:08 p.m., to the 700 block of Vanderbilt Avenue for a call of a structure fire. On arrival, firefighters discovered the home fully filled with smoke and began looking for the cause. They located a fire in the basement, that was started when plastic bins full of clothing were stored over an extension cord that was insufficient and being used to power a refrigerator. Damage was estimated at $6,000.
• FIRE: On March 6, a large amount of smoke in the 1200 block of Beech Avenue, at 8:56 a.m., sent Platoon 3 to the area. Firefighters discovered a person burning debris in an illegally installed wood-burning stove in his garage. City building inspectors were called to the scene to further investigate.
• ACCIDENT: On March 8, Engine 7’s crew, consisting of Capt. Jeff Benjamin and Firefighters Frank Casper, and Thomas Cutler responded, at 8:42 p.m., to the 7400 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard for a two-vehicle collision. Three people were treated for their injuries and one required spinal immobilization measures before they were transported to a local hospital. The crew remained on the scene for more than an hour, using an absorbent agent to control a gasoline spill.
• FIRE: On March 10, Platoon 3 was called, at 7:45 a.m., to a vehicle fire in the alley of the 500 block of 10th Street. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a 2004 GMC Envoy completely involved in flames. The fire was also spreading to an adjacent garage. Damage was pegged at $10,000 to the truck and $5,000 to the garage. The fire was intentionally set and a suspect has been arrested and charged with arson.
