The father of a 15-month-old child and the child's babysitter were both charged after they were caught with another man smoking marijuana in a Wheatfield motel room with the toddler Friday night.
A Niagara County Sheriff’s deputy said he was called to a motel on the 3900 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard about 8:20 p.m. for a report of a child in a room where his father was smoking marijuana.
The deputy located the room, knocked on the door and was hit with the overwhelming smell of marijuana when it was opened by the father, Paul Seagrave Jr.
The deputy said the room was filled with smoke and he could see a small child sitting on a bed and two other people in the room, a man and a woman.
After the deputy opened a door to air the room out a bit, Seagrave told him he was on a break from work and had come to the motel room to see his son and smoke marijuana. He handed the deputy a full bag of weed and a glass marijuana smoking device. He also said there was more marijuana and pills in the nightstand.
Seagrave told the deputy all drugs were his and apologized for his actions, stating, “I know it was stupid and I’m so sorry.”
The deputy then spoke with the woman in the room, Brianna Myers, who told him she was the boy’s babysitter and she had been looking after the child for the past seven days. She said she brought the child from her home in Amherst to visit with Seagrave and admitted she had been smoking the marijuana too. She was also apologetic, telling the deputy, “I know it was stupid and I’m sorry.”
The other man in the room was a co-worker of Seagrave’s who said he drove him to the room to partake in the marijuana smoking. He was not charged by police.
The child appeared to be OK, the deputy said, and there appeared to be no need for medical treatment.
An attempt was made to contact the child's mother but all three people in the room told the deputy she was unlikely to come out for the child, and the deputy stated she never returned his call about her son. The child was allowed to go home with Myers, the babysitter, and her mother who came out to the motel to pick her up.
The deputy checked the nightstand and found the other bag of marijuana and 11 Xanax pills and seven unidentified yellowish pills.
Seagrave, 28, 2736 Elmwood Drive, Kenmore, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana. Additional charges are pending after the official weight of the weed is determined by a lab, the deputy added.
Myers, 18, 89 Glenhaven Drive, Amherst, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
New York State Child Protective Services was notified of the incident as well.
