NIAGARA FALLS: Husband charged in stabbing case
Acting on an indictment handed up Tuesday afternoon by a Niagara County grand jury, Falls police have made an arrest in the city’s second homicide of 2009.
Detectives picked up Robert E. Johnson, 26, on Rose Street in Buffalo at 5:15 p.m. and took him to the Niagara County Jail. Johnson is charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in the slaying of his wife Ahkenya Johnson.
“He was our main suspect all along,” Falls Detective Capt. Ernest Palmer said Tuesday night. “Our forensic evidence showed he was the only one in the apartment.”
Ahkenya’s body was discovered in her Jordan Gardens apartment on Jan. 17 after police responded to a 911 call there.
“The victim was found with multiple stab wounds, several knives were used, it appears to be a very emotional crime,” Palmer said at the time. The body was discovered by her husband, who said he had just returned home from a trip to the barber shop.
The detective chief said investigators had found no history of domestic violence in the family. In addition to being married, Johnson was a mother of two.
On Tuesday, Palmer said forensics played a role in the arrest.
“He had blood evidence on him that was inconsistant with his story,” he said, later adding, “He gave varying accounts of what happened, none of them added up.”
When he was taken into custody, Johnson, who had spoken to police three times before, made no statements to detectives.
Johnson is scheduled to be arraigned in Niagara County Court later today.
