Lewiston man hides in ladies room after Lockport rollover

Niagara Gazette — Police said they found a driver involved in a Sunday rollover accident in the area of Route 31 and Heath Street hiding in the women’s bathroom of a nearby tavern.

After an investigation, David Spencer, 26, 4606 Model City Road, Lewiston, was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, speeding, unsafe lane change and refusing to take a screen test.

Police responded to a rollover accident at 1:10 a.m. and were notified that the driver had fled the scene and was last seen running east on Route 31.

Police followed his footprints in the snow right to the tavern, Casa Montego.

Officers talked to the bartender who described Spencer and reported he ran into the bar yelling, "I can't go back to prison. I just flipped my truck."

Police noted there were no patrons in the bar and officers found Spencer hiding in the ladies room. He was taken to Lockport Police Headquarters.

He refused to perform field sobriety tests and to take a breath test after being read his DWI warnings.
