For the period of March 11 to 17, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 111 calls. The total number of service calls to date in 2013 is 1,241. The department reported the following activities during the period in question:
• FIRE: On March 11, Platoon 4 responded, at 11:39 p.m., to a report of a building fire in the 600 block of Seventh Street. The occupant of the building had soaked some logs in gasoline and then attempted to start a fire in her fireplace with them. The only thing that started on fire was a nearby rug. Damage was set at $200.
• MUTUAL AID: On March 12, Engine 8, at 3:30 p.m, went to a large apartment building fire in the Town of Niagara to assist volunteer firefighters on the scene. Niagara County Mutual Aid is a system that allows fire companies to leave their normal jurisdictions to help other jurisdictions when manpower or equipment is shorthanded. Engine 8 remained on the scene for approximately one hour.
• FIRE: On March 13, Platoon 2 was dispatched, at 7:48 a.m., to an apartment fire in the 3400 block of Ninth Street. Quick work was done with an 1 3/4 inch hose line by Engine 3's crew, consisting of Capt. Mike Winker and Firefighters Paul Pearson, Tim Kennedy, and Josh Mayes, to extinguish the fire in a third floor apartment. The fire was accidental, but the exact cause remains under investigation. Damage was estimated at $7,000 to building and contents.
• FIRE: On March 13, a garage fire sent Platoon 1, at 5:13 p.m., to the 400 block of 18th Street. Two youths were observed in the area of the garage earlier and were questioned by fire investigators and Falls Police Department Juvenile Division detectives. Damage was listed at $2,000.
• FIRE: On March 13, a report of a structure fire, at 11:48 p.m., in the 600 block of Seventh Street required a response from Platoon 1. The house was built in 1880, before electrical service was available to residences, and the retrofitting of the electrical system in the home was inadequate for current building codes. That inadequacy caused the fire. Numerous other natural gas and plumbing violations were discovered and a city building inspector condemned the building.
• FIRE: On March 17, Platoon 3 responded, at 5:21 a.m., to a garage fire in the 6600 block of Lindbergh Avenue. The garage was heavily involved in fire upon the crews arrival and the cause remains under investigation. Damage was extensive to the garage and a vehicle located inside. Damage was estimated at $25,000.
• FIRE: On March 17, Engine 3 was sent, at 3:27 p.m., to a car fire in the 3100 block of Ninth Street. A fire in the passenger compartment was caused by careless disposal of smoking materials and caused $3,000 damage.
