NIAGARA FALLS — OLCOTT

Drowning victim identified

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office has identified the Rochester man who drowned Thursday afternoon in Lake Ontario, near the Olcott Harbor.

Michael J. Steger, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was fishing with two friends, when he decided to go swimming off the boat. He had difficulty swimming, and one of the other two men jumped from the boat in an attempt to rescue him.

His friends got him back on board the 22-foot boat. They began CPR and rushed him back to the Olcott Harbor. Once back on shore, fire personnel took over the resuscitation efforts, but to no avail.
