Boy rolls his way into trouble at Rapids

A 14-year-old boy was detained by police early Sunday morning after he was caught on video surveillance smashing a glass door at Rapids Bowling Alley, 9524 Niagara Falls Blvd.

Falls police responded to the vandalism at 1:11 a.m. and were given a security tape that showed a teen throwing a white “ski ball” through the glass entrance to the pro shop. The youth was found still inside the bowling alley and was detained and handcuffed by police.

The boy, who could face charges of criminal mischief, was transported home and turned over to his mother.

Damage to the glass door was listed at $500.

• CHARGED: Joseph L. Szwalla, 26, 2219 Walnut Ave., was charged with driving while intoxicated after being pulled over at 4:01 a.m. Sunday. An officer witnessed Szwalla driving at a high rate of speed in the 1500 block of Pine Avenue and then turning the wrong way down 21st Street. After being pulled over, Szwalla tried to flee from his vehicle but was stopped by police. He admitted to drinking “five beers” earlier in the evening and failed several field sobriety tests. Officers also found a spilled can of Milwaukee’s Best Ice Beer on the front seat of Szwalla’s vehicle. In addition to being charged with DWI, Szwalla was given tickets for failure to signal a turn and driving the wrong way down a one-way street.

• CHARGED: William A. Jones Sr., 52, 549 16th St., was charged with driving while intoxicated at 8:50 p.m. Saturday. Police found Jones passed out behind the wheel of a car still running and blocking traffic at the intersection of 14th and Niagara streets. He failed one field sobriety test before almost falling to the ground, officers said. Jones was also ticketed for not wearing a seat belt and having expired auto insurance.

Francis, 18, 235 Juanita Drive, was issued three driving citations Saturday night after being pulled over driving an ATV with no headlights eastbound on Cayuga Drive near 91st Street. The vehicle’s identification number was not registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles and Francis did not have valid registration or insurance.
