For the period of Dec. 10 to 16, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 119 calls. The total number of service calls for 2012 to date is 6.083.
• FIRE: On Dec. 12, Platoon 3 responded, at 7:14 p.m., to a report of a building fire in the 1100 block of Linwood Avenue. Drapery material on a chainlink fence had been set on fire and spread to the exterior of two houses. Arriving crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire that caused approximately $1,000 damage. The incident is under investigation.
• RESCUE: On Dec. 12, Truck 1's crew, consisting of Captain Bob Andrews and Firefighters Joe Pedulla, Mike Fleming, and Jeremiah Traver, used ladders and specialized equipment, at 10:53 p.m., to rescue two people in a stalled elevator at the Culinary Institute on Old Falls Street.
• FIRE: On Dec. 13, Engine 8 and Truck 1 were dispatched, at 10:41 p.m, to a vehicle fire in the 2400 block of MacKenna Avenue. The passenger compartment of a stolen 2003 GMC truck was fully involved in fire upon arrival. After the fire was extinguished, investigators ruled out any accidental cause for the fire. The incident is under investigation. Damage listed at $10,500.
• ACCIDENT: On Dec. 16, Engine 3 was sent, at 2:23 a.m., to the 1600 block of Michigan Avenue for a motor vehicle accident with injuries. Two people were treated on the scene for their injuries and transported to area hospitals.
• FIRE: On Dec. 16, A fire at a boarding house in the 1900 block of Niagara Street, at 5:41 p.m., sent a full assignment from Platoon 2 into service. A man had set his bedding on fire and, although crews were able to rapidly put out the fire, numerous building code violations were observed inside the structure. A city building inspector was called to the scene and the structure was condemned until the violations can be corrected.
• NOTE: The number of residential fires always goes up during colder months, peaking between December and February. Portable space heaters substantially contribute to this increase. Before plugging in your space heater, make sure you know how to use it safely. Carefully read the directions for its use. Never place a space heater where a child or pet could accidentally knock it over. Never place a space heater too close to a bed. Keep newspapers, magazines, and fabrics from curtains, clothes, or bedding away from space heaters, radiators, and fireplaces. Heaters should be at least 3 feet from anything flammable.
