• FIRE: On Dec. 19, Platoon 3 was sent, at 11:52 a.m., to a report of a building fire at a vacant commercial structure in the 1300 block of Military Road. A homeless man had pitched a tent against the rear of the structure and accidentally started it on fire due to careless smoking. Damage to the structure was estimated at $1,000.

• FIRE: On Dec. 20, Engine 3 responded, at 1:52 p.m., to a vehicle fire in the 2900 block of 22nd Street. An electrical malfunction in the engine compartment of a 1999 Chevy truck was the cause of the fire and damage was set at $2,000.

• NOTE: Fireplaces should be kept clean and covered with a screen to keep sparks from jumping out. Only wood should be burned in the fireplace as paper and other materials can escape while burning and ignite nearby items. Never burn any plastic materials. Don’t leave a fire burning unattended and make sure a fire is completely extinguished before leaving the house or going to bed. Have your chimney professionally cleaned once a year.
