NIAGARA FALLS — CHEERS
• JON THE STAND: A week ago, Niagara County stood united. The event was the annual YWCA’s Stand Against Racism. “We know that it’s not a comfortable thing that anyone chooses to talk about, but it is something that we can have an opportunity to do something about,” said Khaleelah Shareef, who served as one of the YWCA of Niagara’s ambassadors for the event. “Failure to talk about it, does not make it go away.” Unfortunately, racism hasn’t dissolved. But taking a stand isn’t something Niagarans should do one day a year. Fighting racism is an ongoing battle.
• BREAK A LEG: Move over Broadway. Niagara University deserves a standing ovation for its new $3.1 million Elizabeth Ann Clune Center for Theatre and renovated William P. and Marie Leary Theatre. The renovated Leary Theatre seats 134 people and includes improved acoustics and lighting, an enhanced tech booth and backstage facilities such as a new green room, make-up room and backstage storage.
• A MAIN EVENT: Another spark of revival soon will be seen on Main Street. Christine Harchar is renovating 1700 Main St. to open “First Impressions Salon and Day Spa.” The Niagara Falls native said she wasn’t sure at first about pursuing her dream on Main Street but is excited about the possibilities and encouraged by recent development. So are we.

• GIVE IT UP: Once again, the Niagara County Legislature is taking on the New York State Power Authority. The Legislature agreed Tuesday to call for a state Inspector General investigation of possible misconduct by the New York Power Authority board of trustees. Legislator John Ceretto, R-Lewiston, sponsored the resolution because former NYPA trustee Elise Cusack was hired by the authority for a lucrative part-time post. Minority Leader Dennis Virtuoso suggested it’s motivated by politics and puts the Legislature in the position of looking like it’s trying to run the state. We agree. It also doesn’t help that Ceretto is a candidate for state Assembly. There are more pressing issues for the Legislature to pursue ... like county business.
