CHEERS & JEERS: May 14's best and worst of the week

NIAGARA FALLS — CHEERS

• STAMP OUT HUNGER: On Saturday, postal workers collected food for the needy. This campaign has been highly successful in the region. Five out of the past seven years Western New York ranked No. 1 in the nation in total pounds of food collected by the Letter Carriers. Last year, Western New York ranked No. 2 in the nation while collecting almost 2 million pounds of food. The Greater Niagara Community led the way with 165,000 pounds of food. The campaign is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers and United Way of Niagara, AFL-CIO, U.S. Postal Service.

• FOR OUR VETERANS: An ambitious $3.4 million project to honor local war veterans is coming to fruition. Fittingly, the ground-breaking ceremony for the Niagara Falls Veterans Memorial at Hyde Park will be held over Memorial Day weekend. The project will encompass 6.5 acres of land at Hyde Park. The centerpiece, which will be constructed during the first phase, will be a monument designed after the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and include the names and branch of service of close to 1,000 local U.S. soldiers killed in battle. The first phase is expected to be completed by Veterans Day. We salute the project.

JEERS

• BUDGET FIASCO: In the latest chapter of the state fiscal crisis, U.S. District Judge Lawrence Kahn has blocked a furlough for state workers. The furloughs were reluctantly approved by the Legislature on Monday night to help keep New York solvent. Four unions took the issue to court. The state budget is more than 40 days overdue and negotiations among legislative leaders on how to contend with a $9.2 billion deficit have ground to a halt. It seems state workers aren’t willing to share the pain. Gov. David Paterson ordered the furloughs of “nonessential” workers saying the measure would save $30 million a week. Unions also have rejected requests for less severe measures, such as postponing 4 percent raises to save the state money. Paterson himself has taken a 10 percent cut in pay, or more than $17,000, as he called for shared sacrifice during the fiscal crisis. Kahn set a hearing on the dispute for May 26.

  • EDITORIAL: U.S. has a lot of catching up to do in War of 1812 bicentennial

Almost 200 years after President Madison declared the War of 1812 there is a distinct lack of interest on this side of the border in commemorating that milestone.

Niagara Falls has always been promoted as a world-class destination.
Generations of honeymooners helped the city attain that coveted status, but that’s only a fraction of the people who keep  coming from around the globe to enjoy the natural wonder here.

In a high stakes game of chicken between cable network MSG and the region’s largest cable TV provider Time Warner Cable, the only people losing right now are hockey fans the region over.

  • Opinion sig EDITORIAL: Time to take action on SPCA

Although the dust still has to settle around the horrific complaints by a former employee of the Niagara County SPCA and others, we were discouraged to learn that the animal shelter is still struggling with a lack of leadership.

  • EDITORIAL: The bus stops here — and let's keep it that way

The NFTA’s proposed cuts to local bus routes have the potential to really hurt the little guy, the rider who relies on the bus to get to work, to shop, to get to the doctor’s.
    It just shouldn’t happen.
