Monday’s newspaper featured a story about Jan DiFrancesco and her determination to let everyone know about a check scam she came across.
Jan was one of the smart ones who, upon receiving a check that looked fishy, contacted authorities at the U.S. Postal office and police.
Fortunately Jan is someone who noticed some of the inconsistencies with the check and felt something was wrong right off the bat.
Unfortunately, some aren’t as astute.
Every few months, we find ourselves writing an editorial like this, with hopes of alerting readers to the various scams out there: whether it’s the infamous check-cashing scam, as was detailed in Jan’s story, or credit card scams or phone call scams.
Regardless of the type of scam, all need to be stopped and people need to be alerted.
If you suspect you are being scammed, contact police. Or in this case, contact the post office. They should know as well.
More importantly, help your elderly relatives with mail and phone calls that may seem fishy.
They are easy targets for these sly folks.
Be careful out there —and do what you can to cut off their attempts as early and often as possible.

EDITORIAL: The bus stops here — and let's keep it that way
The NFTA’s proposed cuts to local bus routes have the potential to really hurt the little guy, the rider who relies on the bus to get to work, to shop, to get to the doctor’s.
It just shouldn’t happen. - More Editorials Headlines
