CHEERS & JEERS: April 16's best and worst of the week

NIAGARA FALLS — CHEERS

• THE MAIN EVENT: Signs of life are starting to percolate along the Falls’ infamous Main Street. It once seemed the stretch was doomed to decay. But sparks of revival can be seen. The latest news: Lewiston businessmen Harold Hibbard and Emery Simon have purchased the former Slipko’s grocery store. Hibbard said he has contacted two supermarket chains and believes it may even be possible for the property to be revived as some type of food market. With the recent reopening of the Rapids Theatre and other signs of redevelopment along the strip, Hibbard thinks Main Street has the potential for the type of turnaround experienced along Chippewa Street in Buffalo. We agree.

• FOR THE COMMUNITY: Bishop Stephan Booze and his wife, the Rev. Celestine Booze, along with members of the Potter’s House Christian Community Church, have opened the Potter’s House Community Center. Located inside the former St. Paul’s United Methodist Church building at 723 Seventh St., the center features an indoor basketball court, gameroom, computer labs and space for a variety of other youth activities. In the weeks ahead, church volunteers will begin offering student visitors the chance to participate in recreational and educational programs designed to not only entertain them, but to help them grow and learn. Thanks from the kids.

JEERS

• THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: Saturdays in the summer often meant a night at North Tonawanda’s Gateway Harbor Park. However, that’s doomed to change this year. A lack of funding means the popular, free concerts on the canal have been canceled. “We’re just so devastated by this because we worked so hard to do this but the money is just not there,” Gateway Harbor Inc. Vice President Rhonda Ried said.

• DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING FROM SPITZER? Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino’s campaign has hit a major snag. Racy e-mails forwarded by the candidate were released by a political Web site hit. One of the images featured bestiality in an e-mail insulting the French. Another was a photo of President Barack Obama and the first lady that was altered to make them appear to be a pimp and a prostitute. For someone seeking the Empire State’s highest office, this is totally inappropriate.

As Ken Hamilton so eloquently puts it in his column on this page — the SPCA of Niagara would probably be in a lot better shape if everyone took care of their pets.

  • EDITORIAL: U.S. has a lot of catching up to do in War of 1812 bicentennial

Almost 200 years after President Madison declared the War of 1812 there is a distinct lack of interest on this side of the border in commemorating that milestone.

  • EDITORIAL: Times up for SPCA board

This is no time for subtleties or polite requests.
We are now demanding the resignations of the members of the board of the Niagara County SPCA.

  • EDITORIAL: Niagara Falls ‘Can't Wait’ for this

Niagara Falls has always been promoted as a world-class destination.
Generations of honeymooners helped the city attain that coveted status, but that’s only a fraction of the people who keep  coming from around the globe to enjoy the natural wonder here.

  • EDITORIAL: Time Warner is on thin ice

In a high stakes game of chicken between cable network MSG and the region’s largest cable TV provider Time Warner Cable, the only people losing right now are hockey fans the region over.

  • Opinion sig EDITORIAL: Time to take action on SPCA

Although the dust still has to settle around the horrific complaints by a former employee of the Niagara County SPCA and others, we were discouraged to learn that the animal shelter is still struggling with a lack of leadership.

  • EDITORIAL: The bus stops here — and let's keep it that way

The NFTA’s proposed cuts to local bus routes have the potential to really hurt the little guy, the rider who relies on the bus to get to work, to shop, to get to the doctor’s.
    It just shouldn’t happen.
