NIAGARA FALLS — CHEERS
• ALL HAIL LORD STANLEY: Last week, the Stanley Cup came to town thanks to Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane. The ultimate hockey trophy was photographed in the Niagara Falls State Park. “You have the water hitting you, while you’re holding the thing you worked so hard to get for your whole life to get, it’s really cool,” Kane said. For his endeavors, Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster presented Kane with a key to the city. What a great way to showcase the city’s crowning jewel.
• KEEP ON WORKING: The Board of Directors for the Empire State Development Corp. awarded a $400,000 Economic Development Fund grant to TAM Ceramics Group of NY. The grant helped keep the plant going and meant 55 people are still working. “It would have been a lot tougher to get this deal done without the assistance from the Empire State Development Corporation and Niagara County,” TAM Ceramics Group President George Bilkey said. Anything that keeps local people employed works for us.
• A NEW LOOK ON THIRD: Craig Avery, a Lewiston businessman is hoping to finish converting the former Sharks bar at 451 Third St. into a series of storefronts that he says will eventually be home to a brick-oven pizzeria, a liquor store, a convenience shop and, if all goes as planned, one or two other new businesses. “We've received lots of inquiries, but nobody wants to commit until they see something getting done, understandably. Nothing’s been done in this place for so long,” Avery said. There seems like a new spark of life in the heart of the city’s entertainment district.

• STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY: In the past few weeks, we’ve read about some heartbreaking things that people do to their pets. Daisy, a 3-month-old pointer mix, is now safe at the SPCA of Niagara after being beaten severly with a table leg. Also, Buffalo police found a cat “marinating” in spices and oil in the back of a man’s car during a routine traffic stop. In the case of Daisy, Chester Harris of Niagara Falls is facing a misdemeanor charge of torturing or injuring an animal and will appear in Falls city court on Sept. 3. The sad truth is that some people should not have pets. If you are fortunate to be able to care for an animal, do so like it’s a member of the family. The rewards are astounding.
