CHEERS
A FUTURE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT? A Gazette news carrier foiled a burglary early Tuesday which led to the arrest of two Niagara Falls men. Officers said the carrier was delivering papers in the 2600 block of Niagara Avenue at 5 a.m. when she noticed the side door of a home ajar. The carrier later told police she thought the open door was suspicious, so she went to the front of the home and called cops. And the rest is history. Good job.
SHERIFF AWARDS: It’s been a long time coming, but the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department honored its own last week. Almost 150 awards were handed out and retirees from the past three years were recognized for accomplishments. Corrections Officer Kevin J. Sherman was named Officer of the Year for his actions during an attack from an inmate toward a probation officer. Other major awards recipients: Francis J. Polewicz III, Memorial Award for Correction Officer Jason C. Springer; and Deputy Randy S. Fry and Investigator Leonard E. Guagliano, the Craig C. Harmon Memorial Award.
JEERS
PAY TOMORROW: This week the state Legislature has once again proven why they are the most dysfunctional in the nation. Facing a multi-billion dollar deficit, politicians convened Tuesday and put off what Gov. David Paterson called the “tough decisions to save our state.” When they meet next week, deficit reduction measures aren’t on the list of likely agenda items. Without action, Gov. David Paterson said, the 2010-11 budget due April 1 will face a $10 billion deficit. The budget adopted in April was about $131 billion. It seems state legislators have adopted the mindset that spurred the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression: Live beyond your means and don’t pay today what you could pay tomorrow.
NO NOTICE: Betty Babanoury, director of the Niagara Falls Public Library, has stepped down. While she wrote a short letter tendering her resignation to the library board president, no reasons were given. This is Babanoury’s right. But to leave a public position, which she has served in for the past 15 years, without given any notice isn’t right. Moreover, her resignation comes at a time when she expressed concern over the financial support for the libraries next year. Not to mention the state comptroller’s office is working on its final report about the library’s finances — a report that Babanoury requested.

EDITORIAL: The bus stops here — and let's keep it that way
The NFTA’s proposed cuts to local bus routes have the potential to really hurt the little guy, the rider who relies on the bus to get to work, to shop, to get to the doctor’s.
