CHEERS
HELPING HAITI: When tragedy strikes, Western New Yorkers are known for opening their hearts and wallets. Last month’s devastating earthquake in Haiti is no exception. Members of the National Guard’s 107th Airlift Wing are flying C-130 transport planes into and out of Haiti from MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., as part of Operation Unified Response. The mission involves transporting critically injured Haitians to Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Ga., for life-saving care. These heroes deserve a hometown salute. Locally, Niagara University Biology Professor Mark Gallo is raising hundreds of dollars through his Hearts for Haiti campaign. Gallo wove grapevines into a heart and cross arrangement — symbolizing love and hope. He said it has been a way to unite students to help those who are less fortunate.
SETTING LIMITS: If Wheatfield Supervisor Robert B. Cliffe puts himself out of a job, it’s his own fault. But we strongly support Cliffe, who proposed limiting the supervisor position to two terms of office. This was a stance Cliffe campaigned on and now elected, he’s following through. Too often, incumbents become entrenched in office and their is little, if any, political change. Limiting a supervisor’s time to four years, could be a breath of fresh air in the county.
THE DREAM LIVES ON: Sisterhood, a group of community-oriented young women, ranging in age from 14 to 23, are honoring members who have been beneficial to our community and have followed the dreams of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Sisterhood is a group of young girls we started in a church, and we help young girls of the community,” said Joi Robinson, the president of Sisterhood. The group’s awards dinner will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Niagara Falls Housing Authority Family Resource Building, 3001 Ninth St. It sounds like the women throwing the dinner also should be honored for they are “Keeping the Dream Alive.”

FLOATING IN QUESTIONS: It’s time for the Niagara Falls Water Board to change course. Last week, North Tonawanda announced it wasn’t interested in sharing Water Superintendent Paul Drof with the Falls. We really can’t blame NT for the decision. It would have made financial sense for the Falls, but NT would have lost out on the deal. So what happens now? We urge board members to search for a replacement who can guide the organization while lowering operating costs.

EDITORIAL: The bus stops here — and let's keep it that way
The NFTA’s proposed cuts to local bus routes have the potential to really hurt the little guy, the rider who relies on the bus to get to work, to shop, to get to the doctor’s.
It just shouldn’t happen. - More Editorials Headlines
