The Lewiston-Porter school board is expected to vote tonight on a contended “cost control” referendum, continue budget discussions and decide on a representative for the BOCES board.
It is unclear how the entire seven member board will vote on the annual referendum that authorizes the school board to call a special district meeting and hold an advisory referendum vote whenever a contract between the district and an employee union or the superintendent results in an increase in cost greater than $100,000.
The “cost control” referendum has been approved by voters in each of the past five years, and four board members have confirmed they are likely to vote in favor of the policy, which is all that is needed for it to appear on May’s election day ballot.
Board Member’s Robert Weller, Jim Sperduti, Ed Waller and Keith Fox said they are likely to vote in favor of the measure, with Sperduti having some reservations.
“... I think it is a waste of taxpayer money to hold a ‘non-binding’ referendum since the board can still vote to approve any contract even if the citizens vote against it,” Sperduti said. “Since board members are supposed to represent the will of the people I think the referendum should be on the ballot as long as it is properly and legally submitted.”
Fox agreed with Sperduti saying the referendum is popular with the taxpayers of Lewiston-Porter and he will vote to make sure it goes forward.
Last year the referendum passed 1,643 to 1,122.
The board is expected to nominate a representative to the BOCES board as the current representative’s term expires June 30. Former board member Edward Lilly currently represents Lew-Port on the 13-member BOCES board, but Fox said it is likely Lilly will be replaced and Lew-Port will nominate a sitting board member to the post.
The district will continue budgetary discussions as they look to eliminate a $1.8 million budget gap.
Teacher’s Union President Kevin Jaruszewski said he will be giving a presentation to ensure the union is properly represented during budget discussions.
The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. in the district administration building. Public comment is permitted but limited to three minutes.
