Few details were available late Sunday regarding a man found dead in Meyers Lake on Saturday night.
Staff at the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department, which is handling the investigation, had no new information, including the identity of the victim.
Lewiston Police Sgt. Frank Previte said the man was with a small group of people “camping” in the area. The group was eating and drinking around a small fire, he said, when the man became lost in the wooded area.
Upon arrival, Lewiston police and Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies were advised the man was not familiar with the area and was possibly intoxicated.
State police and Border Patrol officers were called in and an extensive search was undertaken utilizing K-9 officers, night-vision equipment and ATV patrols.
After about two hours, the man was found in Meyers Lake. Previte said a county dive team was requested to the area. After being recovered, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
As investigation is ongoing, according to a Sheriff’s department press release, and the cause of death is pending.
An autopsy is expected to be done today, Previte said.
