NIAGARA FALLS —
A dog found malnourished and neglected Saturday is fighting to live, according to SPCA of Niagara Executive Director John Faso.
The 6-month-old Great Dane puppy, found by residents near the intersection of 17th Street and Willow Avenue, has been given a 50 percent chance of surviving by a local veterinarian caring for the puppy as its temporary foster caretaker.
“I just sat there with him,” said Rachel Showers, one of the concerned residents who reported the dog. “He just plopped in my lap and laid there with me.”
Showers posted photos of the puppy to the Niagara Gazette’s Facebook page Saturday, looking for more information on the owner. She said the dog is not a stranger to the neighborhood, having been seen multiple times being walked by an unidentified man.
She said the dog never appeared in danger before, though it had been roughly two months since the last time her family had seen it.
Faso said the dog had a laundry list of maladies when it was picked up. In addition to being emaciated, the dog had a severe calcium deficiency, which caused the legs to appear broken.
“The condition in the dog’s legs is the result of the body breaking down the calcium in the bones,” he said. “With malnutrition like this, the body starts to shut down.”
Faso said the dog’s breed is unusual in the neighborhood, meaning the SPCA is hoping someone comes forward with information about the owner.
But the puppy, should it survive and is able to be adopted, should make someone a happy owner, Showers said.
“I just hope it’s able to be put up for adoption,” Showers said. “I know I fell in love with this dog after just five minutes with him.”
Anyone with more information about the dog can contact the SPCA of Niagara at 731-4368.
