Niagara Gazette — It's fair to say that William "Black" Matthews is no stranger to Falls Police Narcotics detectives.
"He's not a high-level (drug) dealer," Detective Steve Reed said. "But he's a very active dealer, a nuisance dealer and he brings a bad element into the neighborhood."
So Reed, and fellow Narcotics Detective Joe Giaqunito, made it a priority to finally track "Black" down. They found him in the 1100 block of Niagara Avenue.
"We heard that he was living and selling over there," Reed said.
The veteran detectives put Matthews’ home under surveillance and they weren't surprised by what they saw.
"There was a lot of traffic," Reed said. "And a lot of daytime traffic."
What did surprise detectives though was what else they found at the home.
"He had five children living in the home with him," Reed said. "And he would send them off to school in the morning and then start selling."
Thursday morning, armed with search and arrest warrants and after the four school-aged children in the home had left for classes, the detectives and the police Emergency Response Team paid Matthews a visit.
"(Det. Giaquinto) and I took (Matthews) down outside and the ERT hit the house," Reed said. "He was surprised to see us, but he knew why we were there."
Inside the home, police found a woman and a 1-year-old child. They also seized almost 7 grams of crack cocaine, a small amount of marijuana, a quantity of unidentified pills and a dagger.
Matthews, 38, 1162 NIagara Ave., was charged with third- and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.
