Niagara Gazette — Despite all the doom and gloom you hear these days about the U.S. Postal Service, there's at least one bright note on the local scene. They're hiring.
The Niagara Falls Post Office announced Tuesday that it plans to hire six city carrier assistants, known as CCAs, a new category of non-career employees with an opportunity to become career letter carriers. Previously there was no process for temporary postal service employees to move into a full-time job. That opportunity now exists, provided the applicant meets the criteria including a personal interview, drug screening and a background check.
A Post Office spokesperson said that CCAs are appointed for a term of 360 calendar days and may be reappointed for the same term after a five-day break in service. The jobs include all the duties normally handled by a city letter carrier, according to Karen Mazurkiewicz, communications director for the U.S. Postal District-Buffalo Office.
She said the salary and limited benefits include $15 per hour, paid vacation days and health care benefits.
The deadline to apply is March 11. Candidates must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record and at least two years of driving experience.

Earlier this year, the Post Service had announced it would hire some 300 of the city carrier assistants in Western New York but the response was less than expected, Mazurkiewicz said, probably because potential applicants wanted to know specific work sites.
Larry Kania, president of Branch 3-National Association of Letter Carriers-Buffalo and Western New York, said that of the 40 persons from the Lockport and Niagara Falls areas slated for interviews only 25 showed up. "So they had to re-post the (jobs) notice." Kania said. "Under this system that was approved in mid-January, if a carrier retires, the senior CCA will get hired. We (the union) have been fighting for that for a long time."
