Niagara Gazette — A fire in a home at 274 Nassau Ave. in Kenmore left a dog dead Monday evening.
"According to the first driver on the scene, the flames were visible when they got there," Felix Coniglio, president of the Kenmore Fire Department said. "They broke through the roof in the back and came through to the eaves, and there was definitely a lot of smoke."
The fire broke out in the second floor of the two-family home, and although no one was home at the time of the fire, which began at about 5:30 p.m., firefighters brought out a beagle from the residence.
Firefighters administered CPR, but were not able to save the animal.
The Kenmore Fire Department, with the assistance of the Ellwood Fire Department and the Kenilworth Fire Department, were on the scene until after 11 p.m.
"There was fire and heavy smoke damage to the second floor and water damage to the first," a statement from the fire department said.
Estimated damages amount to $125,000.
Coniglio said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed it was caused by careless smoking.
