Pendleton standoff ends in man's suicide

PENDLETON — A man believed to have shot his wife in the face this morning has killed himself at his Campbell Road home, police said.

His 3-year-old son was released from the home a short time before police made the discovery.

Police responded to a call of an injured woman on the side of Campbell Boulevard from a passerby. The woman was taken to Erie County Medical Center with serious injuries and police set up a perimeter around the home on the 5700 block of Campbell Boulevard in Pendleton.

Niagara County Sheriff James Voutour later briefed a crowd of reporters standing in a parking lot up the street from the scene, warning that the situation was still "live."

Voutour said that the sheriff’s office is working with police from Lockport and New York state troopers to diffuse the situation

"We have helicopters as well in the air from Border Patrol," Voutour said. "At this point we're securing the perimeter and attempting to make contact with the person inside."

Voutour said because they had not made any contact, police could not be totally certain that the suspect was in the house.

"We're not 100 percent confirmed but we're pretty sure he is (in the house),"  Voutour said.

Voutour said that all the surrounding houses had been evacuated and that police negotiators were attempting to make contact with the suspect.

"A team of a state police investigator and a Niagara County Sheriff’s sergeant are attempting to make contact from the outside, but are not having any luck at this point," Voutour said.

The suspect is a white male, 5-foot-7, in his mid 40s, heavy set and heavily tattooed. Voutour said that he is known to police, but declined to reveal his identity.

Do you think cigarette sales to non-Native American customers should be taxed on reservations?

Yes. Items should be taxed like they are everywhere else.
No, the indian reservations are sovereign land and they are selling them on their land.
Not up to me. Native Americans decide the rules on their land.
Don't care. Smoking isn't good for you.
