Niagara Gazette — The off-duty Erie County Sheriff's deputy who was charged after hitting a motorcyclist at a red light in August pleaded guilty Monday to charges of vehicular assault and DWI.
Michael E. Haug, 29, is scheduled to be sentenced before Erie County Judge Thomas P. Francyzk on Jan 30, when he will face a maximum sentence of 7 years in prison.
Haug of Kenmore was driving his 2011 Jeep on Aug. 4 around 4 a.m. when he hit motorcyclist David Colosimo, who was sitting at a red light at Bailey Avenue and Sheridan Drive in Amherst.
Colosimo, 37, of the Town of Tonawanda, was thrown from his 1982 Suzuki motorcycle and suffered serious head injuries. He was sent to Erie County Medical Center's intensive care unit, but has since been released.
Sheriff Timothy B. Howard said Tuesday that Haug sent in his resignation Tuesday, after being suspended without pay since the incident.
"The resignation was effective Nov. 7," Howard said.
Haug had been in the force for about five and a half years before the crash. He also has family members in local law enforcement.
Haug refused a breath test after the accident, but authorities obtained a court order for a blood draw due to the severity of the accident. He was released on $25,000 after the accident. In September, his case went to grand jury.
