LOCKPORT —
Friends of Deputy Craig Beiter of the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office are planning a benefit on Feb. 26 to raise money to buy and train a new dog for the K-9 Unit.
Beiter’s German shepherd, Deputy Rocky, was killed while on duty in January, and the sheriff’s office is close to getting a replacement.
The cost of the dog and training will be from $5,000 to $10,000. The dog will likely come from Germany or Czechoslovakia.
The sheriff’s office has already looked at two dogs as candidates for “Rocky II.” One didn’t do well with the veterinarian and the other didn’t seem to have the right personality.
While there is no budget line for a dog replacement, the sheriff’s office has funds to buy the dog and train it. Any funds left over will be divided between the DARE program and Sheriff’s Marine Division.
Sheriff James Voutour was approached by Joe Macaluso, David Leible and Jeff Jarvis to have the benefit, and he gave the green light.
“If you want donate, that’s great,” Voutour said. “They can do any fundraiser they want. They’re on their own. People have sent us a lot of checks.”
The fundraiser will be held from 1-6 p.m. at the Wendelville Fire Co. Tickets include food, entertainment and a basket raffle.
Members of the Wendelville Fire Co. and Pendleton Lions Club are also volunteering.
“It seems to be coming along pretty good. We’re getting a lot of nice donations,” said Leible, who is on the Pendleton Town Board. “We’re just trying to do a good thing for community. It’s amazing what people in this community do. People jump in. It’s super.”
Rocky worked in the Pendleton area several times, Leible said.
“It’s great what they’re doing,” Voutour said. “The donations are like crazy.”
Checks can be mailed to Joseph Macaluso, 4630 Meyer Road, North Tonawanda, NY 14120 or David Leible, 4096 Beach Ridge Road, North Tonawanda, NY 14120. They will be forwarded to the Rocky Fund at Citizens Bank. Write “Rocky Benefit” in the memo.
