CEO gets hands dirty on “Undercover Boss”

By Nick Mattera

The president of a local environmental services company will be featured on a new CBS television show, giving executives a unique perspective into their company’s everyday operations.

“Undercover Boss” will premier Sunday, immediately following the Super Bowl and will follow corporate leaders as they anonymously work side-by-side with front-line employees.

Waste Management Inc. — which has operations in the Town of Porter — will be featured on the premiere show as President and Chief Executive Officer Larry O’ Donnell trades his business suit for roadside trash, as he works alongside employees from Houston, Syracuse and Rochester. While undercover, O’Donnell cleaned portable toilets, sorted recycling goods and gained insider knowledge on the inner-workings of his company.

“From this experience, I learned more about the company’s day-to-day waste, recycling, energy and disposal operations and the employees who work so hard every day,” O’Donnell said. “Armed with this new perspective, I was able to make improvements and recognize some of the company’s hard-working, talented front-line employees.”

Waste Management Community Relations Manager Lori Caso said O’Donnell did not travel to the Porter facility during taping, but the show will give the local community a look into the way the company operates.

“We’re incredibly proud for the public to learn more about Waste Management, our industry, and our employees,” Caso said. “It’s a glimpse into how we strive to responsibly manage waste and serve our communities while protecting the environment in a sustainable manner.”

Caso said that O’Donnell has developed a personal relationship with the employees, going as far as to invite those featured in the hour-long premier to travel to New York City for dinner today and to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

“It’s cool that someone I have met in our company is going to be on national television,” Caso said. “I’ll be watching.”
