LOCKPORT —
The Niagara Communities Comprehensive Plan 2030, approved by the county Legislature last year, recently got an “honorable mention” award from the American Planning Association, Western New York section.
The comprehensive plan sets five goals for the county over a 20-year period: encourage “thoughtful” growth and development; strengthen the local economy; improve delivery of public services; coordinate and prioritize capital projects; and improve the quality of life for residents. It’s organized around five focus areas: Land use and environment, economic development, county services/facilities/infrastructure, education and public health and safety.
Securing federal money for brownfield reclamation, and pursuit of Geographic Information Systems to track business and brownfield activities, are two recent works by the Economic Development Department that were inspired by the comprehensive plan, according to county Legislator Richard Updegrove, R-Lockport, chairman of the legislature’s economic development committee.
