The New York Power Authority’s Niagara Power Vista will provide the setting for a free Rain Barrel Workshop from 1 to 2 p.m. Nov. 3.
The workshop is sponsored by Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper.
The session is part of a new program aimed at battling the problem of sewer overflow that causes more than 4 billion gallons of raw sewage to enter area waterways each year, organizers said.
The Riverkeeper group wants to promote the use of rain barrels as a way to divert stormwater runoff.
The program aims to educate the public on the benefits of rain barrel use and the important role they can play in controlling the runoff of polluted water into the sewer system.
As part of the program, Riverkeeper will distribute 161 rain barrels free of charge and plans to sell another 1,000 barrels annually. The program is supported through a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Workshop attendees are also invited to enjoy the Niagara Power Vista’s attractions, which include displays and interactive exhibits relating to the production of electricity, energy efficiency and the area’s history, as well as views from the observation deck, 350 feet above the Niagara River Gorge.
Parking and admission are always free at the Power Vista, 5777 Lewiston Road.
