NIAGARA FALLS —
The Internal Revenue Service has reminded taxpayers that they have an extra weekend to file their income tax returns this year because of a District of Columbia holiday.
As a result, the deadline for 2011 filing is April 18 instead of this Friday.
With the deadline approaching, U.S. Postal Service officials in the Buffalo-Niagara District have urged last-minute filers to pay special attention to collection box pick-up times. Most post offices close at 5 p.m. with many collection box pick-up times earlier.
Full information about collection box locations and pick up times are available at 1-800-ASK-USPS or online at usps.whitepages.com/post office.
“Tax filers need that April 18 postmark to comply with state and federal mandates,” said Laura Lewis, marketing manager for the USPS-Buffalo District. “Waiting for the 11th hour on the 18th to file is less of an option for those needing forms, postage, and a timely postmark. Therefore, customers are advised to mail early,” Lewis added.
Karen Mazurkiewicz, a communications specialist with the postal service in Buffalo, has offered a few tips for taxpayers:
• On April 18, mail early in the day at any Post Office, branch or collection box.
• If depositing returns in a collection box on April 18, double check the pick-up schedule on the label.
• Stamped packages weighing more than 13 ounces must be presented in person to a Post Office clerk to comply with Federal Aviation Administration regulations.
• Make sure your return is signed and dates and all schedules and supporting documents are enclosed.
• Tax agencies will not pay postage due and your short-paid return will be returned to sender.
• Tax forms are no longer available at the Post Offices. Check at local libraries or online at www.irs.gov (federal forms) or at www.tax.state.ny.us/forms (NY state forms).
An IRS spokesman said that under federal law, the District of Columbia holidays delay tax deadlines in the same way as federal holidays.
