LOCKPORT — Police now believe a shooting early Saturday morning at Casa Montego Club, 38 Heath St., might have been accidental.

“While we’re still not 100 percent sure of anything yet, this is our latest conclusion,” Lockport Police Capt. Rick Podgers said. “It seems like the shooter didn’t target anyone at the way the bullet landed.”

Podgers said the one bullet retrieved by police went through a wall, which struck a woman and a man standing near each other in a small hallway near the bar restrooms around 2:45 a.m. Police the bullet entered and exited the male victim’s arm and struck the woman next to him.

The bullet was sent to a lab Monday for testing.

“We’ll continue an investigation until our questions are answered,” Podgers said.

As of Monday, police had no known suspects, but plan on requestioning all witnesses.

“We first thought no one was being cooperative with us, but they just simply didn’t know what happened,” Podgers said.

Podgers said police are also not sure how the gun got into the club.

“They have tight security there,” he said. “Bouncers frisk all men and woman are put through metal detectors before they enter. It’s hard enough to bring in a pocketknife let alone a gun.”

“We’ll probably have more answers tomorrow,” Podgers said.
