Mike Kellogg began his first day as publisher of Greater Niagara Newspapers on Monday — only a day after he arrived in the area from his former post in Stillwater, Okla.
Thankfully the Niagara Street offices are a familiar place for Kellogg, a former Gazette advertising director.
Kellogg, who served as publisher of the Stillwater NewsPress for the past 10 years, emphasized his commitment to producing a relevant newspaper.
“You have to be a watchdog for the community,” he said. “But you have to keep the community’s best interest at heart.”
Greater Niagara Newspapers includes the Gazette, Lockport Union-Sun & Journal, Tonawanda News and The Journal-Register (Medina).
“If you’re publishing a relevant newspaper, you’re doing a good job,” Kellogg said. “We have to treat our readers with respect, our employees with dignity and make sure we’re getting the stories we’re supposed to.”
Kellogg will be joined by his wife, Gloria, and 10-year old daughter Jillian, who was born at Mount St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston. He has two older children attending college.
The family is excited about returning to the area.
“It’s coming back to a place we like,” Kellogg said. “The people are really nice, it’s beautiful and we had some good times here.”
Kellogg replaces Steve Hall, who left GNN earlier this month for a position with the Canton Repository in Ohio.
