Sexual offender nabbed on return from Canada
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested an American citizen for multiple sex-related offenses after he was denied asylum in Canada.
Officers at the Rainbow Bridge were notified by the Canada Border Services Agency John Lee Gordon, 54, of Newark, New Jersey, was being removed from their country after a failed refugee claim. The Canadian authorities advised Customs officers that Gordon was wanted in New Jersey on various sexual assault charges.
Customs officers determined that Gordon was the subject of a nationwide warrant issued in May by the Essex County Sheriffs Department. The warrant charges Gordon with two counts of aggravated sexual assault, two counts of aggravated sexual contact, and child endangerment.
Gordon fled the United States shortly after the warrant was issued.
Niagara Falls
• ASSAULT: Police are looking for a suspect in an assault that occurred at 3:15 p.m. Sunday in the 2700 block of Highland Avenue. A 32-year-old woman told officers a man punched her in the face three times when she tried to stop him from beating another woman.
• THEFT: Officers are looking into a car break-in in the 500 block of Fifth Street. A 28-year-old woman told police that sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday someone broke into her 2004 Volkswagen Beetle by smashing a rear driver’s side window. The victim said a DVD player was taken.
• BURGLARY: Police are investigating a burglary in the 700 block of Townsend Place. A 49-year-old woman told officers that sometime between 12:01 and 3 p.m. Tuesday someone broke into her apartment through a rear window. The victim said a radio and toaster were taken.
• BURGLARY: Officers are looking into a burglary in the 4600 block of Hyde Park Boulevard. A 28-year-old woman told police that sometime between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday someone broke into her apartment through a window. The victim said a computer, a gold bracelet and a Nintendo game system were taken.
Wheatfield
• ID THEFT: A Plaza Drive woman reported Monday that she received a notice in the mail that she was denied a Sears credit card request. The woman said she already has a card with Sears and did not request a new line of credit. Deputies told the woman to contact her financial institutions and obtain a credit report.
City of Lockport
• DRUGS: Michael J. Sutton, 39, and Jacqueline Sutton, 40, both of 272 Green St., were each charged Monday night with two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. The Niagara County Drug Task Force executed a warrant on the Sutton's home Nov. 21 and found several items, including residue and 15 green tablets. The items tested positive for cocaine.
Hartland
• BURGLARY: A Checkered Tavern Road man reported Monday that over the weekend, someone entered his property and forced entry into a trailer. The door and frame were damaged, but nothing was taken from inside. The trailer was unoccupied. Damage to the door is estimated at $100.
