Niagara Gazette — Both the town and village of Lewiston reported no issues related to the first major snowfall of the winter season Thursday.
A day after cleaning up approximately seven inches of snow, the village department of public works and town highway department supervisors were confident they did the best job possible.
"I think it went pretty well," Highway Superintendent Doug Janese said. "There was quite a bit of drifting out there. But by 6 a.m. all the primary and secondary roads were black. We were able to take a little bit more time with this one because, thankfully, schools were not in session so we didn't have to worry about school buses."
Both Janese and Public Works Superintendent Bryan Meigs credited advance warning about the storm from meteorologists for helping them clear roads as quickly as possible.
Janese said his secret is to start salting the roads before the snow even starts to help keep accumulation on the town's streets to a minimum.
"You've gotta get out there early," he said. "You get the salt down before the snow starts, so it'll melt as it starts to fall. Then you can just plow it down to black later."
"We had good warning (about) the weather and we were ready for it," Meigs added. "Everything worked out great."
In other Lewiston news, a new website for town residents is expected to be available shortly after the start of 2013.
The town switched providers for its official website to Buffalo-based web design company 360 PSG – who recently redesigned the Lower Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce, at www.niagarariverregion.com – in an effort to provide its residents with access to more information.
"In the past, we'd have to send things to our vendor to get things on the website," Town Finance Manager Michael Johnson said. "Now, we'll be able to do things ourselves here in the office. We'll be able to put our budget up for everyone to see, which is what a lot of people are asking for. We'll have meeting minutes available."
Johnson spearheaded the effort to make the switch. He said staff is training to run the website and, once finished, it could go live by Jan. 11.
